After the failure of their Village Green Preservation Society, the Davies brothers and their interchangeable sidekicks went down to the soundtrack of some television play, which was to tell the story of an ordinary Englishman named Arthur and of his little, pathethic life, something very English and so very kinksy. In the end, the television show was cancelled, but the music was nonetheless published, and that’s happy, because Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) may be the Kinks’ best effort: catchy music, clever lyrics. After all the gloomy songs I inflicted on you, I thought something lighter would be welcome, so here comes “Arthur”, the last track of the record, with a mighty and heartening finale.
